3 more days

One of my first posts was titled, “The First Three Days.”  3 months later, and we’re at the LAST 3 days.  We officially move into our new house this Saturday, after putting all we have into its renovation (physically, mentally, emotionally, financially…).  It has been a journey, but I am so happy and proud of the work that Tracy and I have done, and the fact that we made it through this process with our marriage intact.

I will be excited to be in the new house.  But, I can’t lie, I’m starting to feel a little nostalgic about our old house. After all, it was my first house.  I bought it when I was single and had barely started my career and could barely afford a house.  I cried the first time I walked into it after closing because I was so happy.  I slept on the living room floor for a week before I was able to move my stuff in, even though I could have stayed at my old place in a bed.  It was the first time I got to decorate, however I wanted. I have a lot of fond memories of 616 E. Brockton, and I will miss it a little.  Here’s a little look back at the Brockton house before we get into this week’s update:

Ok, that’s enough of my trip down Memory Lane.  Let’s look at our new, almost done house!

This weekend, we were able to spend three full days finishing up things around the house because of the holiday.

SATURDAY

I spent most of the day making last minute shopping trips, and doing some little things around the house (cleaning the bathrooms, setting up bedframes, putting together a headboard, putting together some furniture, etc.)

Tracy spent his whole day putting the granite countertops in the kitchen, and installing the vanity in the downstairs bathroom.  His Dad came over to help again, and spent 11 hours at the house helping Tracy get this stuff done.  We are so grateful for all of the help we’ve had from our Dads on this project!

SUNDAY

I worked on painting a Craigslist-find headboard for one of the guest rooms, and painting my breakfast table dining chairs (also a Craigslist find).  Tracy worked on installing window blinds, painting the stairway and linen closet, and prepping the Family Room for painting (the LAST room that has to be painted!)

Family Room – Ready to Paint

MONDAY

I spent most of the day epoxying our bathtub to try to cover up some chips and discoloration.  This is what I took away from the experience:

1) Read the directions, especially the one about ventilation and only spending a short amount of time in the room before taking a break

2) If your tub is not AWFUL, don’t try to fix it.  I think it ended up looking OK, but only time will tell how it holds up to being used.   In hindsight, I should have left the tub as is.

Oh, well, maybe the bathroom renovation will come sooner than we thought… 🙂

Tracy spent half of the day finishing the prep on the Family Room and painting the celing and trim.  The other half of the day, he and our friend Maurice moved some furniture (Dining Room and Bedroom dressers) back into the house.

Dining Chairs (I am in the process of reupholstering the old chairs.)

Tomorrow, our couches are being delivered and Tracy is painting the Family Room.  After that, our home will be “move-in ready.”  Which is good, because we’re moving in on Saturday, ready or not!

A roundup of Before and After pics to come next week after furniture is in place.

The Home Stretch

Ready or not, move-in day is just 9 days away.  After 3 full months of work, we’ll soon be living in our brand “new” home.  It has been quite a journey, and I can’t wait to show you guys the “after” videos once we have all the furnishings in.  But, I’m getting ahead of myself.  Let me tell you what we got done this weekend.

Painting

Tracy got the Dining Room, the Living Room, the entry way, the kitchen, and the half bathroom completely painted.  The ONLY room left in the house to be painted is the Family Room, and he’ll have that done before this weekend is over.

New Stuff

We had new carpet installed in 3 of the upstairs bedrooms, and all new appliances delivered (washer, dryer, range, refrigerator).  We also got a new mattress and box spring for our room. Everything looks so awesome, and having a stove and refrigerator back in the kitchen (instead of the garage), is pretty darn handy.

We have a bed to sleep on!  and a Fan!

No more air mattress or couches for us!  We set our bed up in the master bedroom, and just need to attach the headboard I upholstered (see previous post for DIY instructions).

Tracy also installed the ceiling fan, which was nice to have in this weekend’s warm weather.  The bedroom is coming together.  A couple of nightstands and maybe some rug rearranging and we’ll be good to go.

FULLY functioning Master Bathroom

Not only do we have a working toilet, sink and shower, but we also have a toilet paper holder, a towel holder, a medicine cabinet/mirror and vanity lights.

Kitchen Cabinets

You’ve seen a ton of pictures of the kitchen throughout this process.  I’m happy to report that the Kitchen cabinets are back in the kitchen, complete with doors, drawers, and hardware.  I LOVE the white cabinets with the gray hardware, so glad I decided to update the hardware instead of buying new.

Kitchen/Breakfast Table

I decided awhile ago that I wanted a white, round pedestal table for the breakfast area.  I looked around online and couldn’t find a set for under $600.  So, I improvised.  I found a great table/chairs on Craigslist for $150 and I am transforming it into my dream table.  Here’s a pic of the “Before.”  I’ll show you the “After” next week.

Dressers

I mentioned in a previous post that we inherited some great dressers from the previous home owners.  The dressers didn’t come perfect, though.  There were several small scratches, some white rings, some gouges.  This weekend, I used an awesome product: Howard Restor-A-Finish http://www.amazon.com/Rockler-Restor-A-Finish-Cherry-8oz/dp/B001ENSKEK to clean the dressers up.  It doesn’t fix the big imperfections, but it cleans up 99% of the little scratches and chips.  The dressers look a ton better now.  For the time being, I’m going to cover the tops with some cool fabric, until we find some free time to do a full refinish of the tops.  I’ll post pics of these next week.

I THINK that’s it!  This Memorial Day weekend will be spent painting the Family Room, painting the Kitchen Table chairs, putting some furniture together for the bedrooms, putting the half bath vanity/fixtures in, and putting the countertop and sink in.  Thank goodness we have three days!  Hopefully we’ll find some time to fire up the grill too 🙂

As always, thanks for reading!
